For consumers, it can cost about the same price to buy box furniture and custom hardwood furniture, but the perception of these big stores is that they are still a better deal and more trendy. However, in the furniture market, those prices have skyrocketed because of outsourcing issues due to Covid-19. The more expensive, the better the assumed quality. Unfortunately, most people rely on price point to tell them if they are purchasing good quality furniture. As consumers, we take time to carefully consider what kind of saftey features are important to us in buying a car, and do hours of research to decide which university to attend, but most consumers are blind to what makes furniture good quality. You might be shocked to realize that purchasing furniture is in your top six expenses, right after buying a car, according to certified financial planners Colin Moynahan and Cristine Centino (Knueven, 2019). I couldn't believe that consumers were willing to pay that kind of money for furniture not built to last. The biggest surprise was that it was almost the same price as the Amish handcrafted furniture. I saw particle board, unfinished drawers, furniture that was glued together, and very rickety chairs that were not made with solid wood. The first thing that shocked me that day was the quality of the furniture. One day she told me to take a break and walk over to the store, and look for the differences. She pointed out the front window of our store to the big box furniture store right across the road from our location, and the flock of customers lining up outside to get in. I also learned another valuable lesson from Agnes that month.

Over the next few weeks I learned how to identify different kinds of woods, what English and French Dovetails were, and what in the world eight-way-hand-tied coils were in a couch. The first day on the job, my coworker Agnes took time to show me how to tell the most significant differences in quality when it comes to furniture. However, I had absolutely no knowledge about furniture, let alone custom Amish handcrafted heirloom furniture. I'm a college student with no money, so of course I was over the moon about the opportunity. It was an enjoyable experience, and I would highly recommend Gish’s Furniture Store and Pia’s interior design service.My uncle called me out of the blue one day over winter break to offer me a job as a salesperson at Gish's Furniture, our family-owned business that sells custom Amish Handcrafted furniture. Her interior design expertise was most valuable to me and is certainly a number one reason to visit the Gish Furniture to have access to her superb design ability.
Her ability to assist us with incorporating furniture pieces from our original home along with selecting appropriate new quality pieces of furniture to compliment each other was greatly appreciated. She worked with us to position furniture pieces, select flooring, carpet, tile, granite choices, kitchen design, lighting fixtures, and mud room/laundry design.
With that, she quickly laid out a design schematic to scale for the whole cottage. What a gem and jewel she was for us she made a major decision for us a pleasure.Upon learning what our reason for visiting the store was, she offered to meet personally with us at our cottage at the retirement home to see exactly what interior design layout would be appropriate. She happened to be the sales associate who immediately met us as we entered the store to explore the possibility of purchasing a few new pieces of furniture for our planned move to a retirement cottage. I cannot fully express my appreciation for Pia’s service.
